We all have food memories from our childhood.
Nana Shumacher’s soup. My nana's family came to UK at the outset of the 1st World War. Her grandad was a clockmaker and his skills were sought after by Hitler's gang ie toolmaking shkills which would have been utilised for warfare ie ammunition to be used against other countries including UK. He escaped from Germany and had a clock business in York. Nana met her future husband, my grandad and moved to Grangetown where he worked in the Steelworks. Nana was always conscious of frugal living and was keen to cook good nutricious food within a tight budget especially with 5 children to feed. My cooking has been influenced by nana who passed her love and passion for cooking to her 3 daughters. Auntie Dot - who was an avid home cook and who looked after me whilst mum worked . Auntie Joan was a great baker too. Mum could cook a good dinner. It was always fun at Christmas when all 3 of them would be in the kitchen together it was only a matter of time before the sparks started to fly often over the thickness of the gravy, the timing of the sprouts or if it was time to put the yorkshire puddings in! I still have the jug the yorkshire pudding mixture was made and whilst it is chipped and repaired I could never part with it. So this is nana Schumacher's soup recipe. Always receives compliments
